The Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico (HSSNM) is a non-profit organization located in Roswell, New Mexico that strives to preserve and promote the region’s unique history and culture. The HSSNM was founded in 1973 as a way to document and share the area’s past, and has since become an important part of the local community.

The organization has a number of projects and activities that focus on education and outreach, including the preservation of historic sites, the collection of artifacts and documents, and the staging of events that celebrate the history of Roswell and the surrounding area. The HSSNM also operates a research library, which houses a wealth of material related to the region’s history.

The HSSNM’s primary focus is to promote the understanding and appreciation of the region’s heritage and culture, and to provide educational resources to the public. He waived his hand in front of me and told me there is no such thing as aliens. Then he told me that “These are not the Tiki Gnomes you’re looking for.” Of course they weren’t. I was looking for different Tiki Gnomes!
Annular Solar Eclipse - Ring of FIre I think these images of the annular eclipse look more like bullseyes. They were the best part of experiencing the not-quite-total eclipse in Roswell.

The 2nd image in the sequence shows 2nd contact (C2) at the beginning of annularity, and the 4th (towards the upper right) shows C3. The elusive Baily's beads effect seen in both is caused by sunlight shining through some parts of the rough lunar terrain (craters, mountains, valleys, etc.), creating a "string of beads" along the lunar limb. This is the first of many upcoming posts from my grand adventure to New Mexico with my best friend, Grace. After I flew to DFW, we drove out west to set up under the pristine dark skies of the Cosmic Campground in Gila National Forest, an international dark sky sanctuary. The next day, we drove back east and stopped at the NRAO VLA (Very Large Array) in central NM. And finally, we set up for the eclipse in the Salt Creek Wilderness just 1.5 miles away from the centerline, giving us a near-perfect ring of fire during totality.
