The Wentworth-Gardner & Tobias Lear Houses Association is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of two historic homes in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The houses, Wentworth-Gardner and Tobias Lear, are both National Historic Landmarks and are located on the same block in downtown Portsmouth. The association was founded in 1970 and is run by a board of trustees.
The Wentworth-Gardner House was built in 1760 and is the oldest surviving frame house in the city. It was originally owned by Governor Benning Wentworth and later purchased by lawyer Tobias Lear. The house features original 18th-century furnishings, including a large collection of furniture and artifacts from the period.
The Tobias Lear House was built in 1805 and is a Federal-style brick house. It was originally owned by Tobias Lear, a Revolutionary War veteran, and is now a museum that interprets early American life. The house is open to the public and offers guided tours, educational programs, and special events throughout the year.
The Wentworth-Gardner & Tobias Lear Houses Association works to preserve and protect these historic properties and promote their educational value to the community. The association also works to promote and preserve Portsmouth’s unique history and culture.
