WENTWORTH-COOLIDGE MANSION

The Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion is a historic mansion located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It is a property of the State of New Hampshire and is currently maintained by the New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation. The mansion was originally built in 1750 by the wealthy merchant, Captain John Wentworth. It was later purchased by Mark Hunking Wentworth in 1764, who made substantial additions and renovations to the structure. In 1873, the mansion was purchased by Theodorick Brenton Coolidge, a Harvard-educated lawyer and businessman.

The mansion is a Georgian-style building with a 2-story main block and a 3-story wing that was added in the early 19th century. The mansion is made of brick and wood and is situated on a hill overlooking the Piscataqua River and the harbor. The interior of the house contains a variety of period furnishings, including a grand staircase and a large library.

The grounds of the mansion include formal gardens, lawns, and walking paths. The grounds also contain a stable, carriage house, and ice house. The grounds are open to the public and offer visitors the opportunity to explore the mansion and grounds and learn about the history of the property. The Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including educational programs, concerts, and special events.
