Oakes African American Gardens is a historic site in Yazoo City, Mississippi that was established in 1907 by a former slave named Henry Oakes. The gardens were initially created as a place for African Americans in the community to gather and enjoy nature, as they were not allowed in the city's white-only parks at the time.

The gardens cover four acres and feature a variety of trees, plants, and flowers, including magnolias, roses, and azaleas. The site also includes a small pond, a gazebo, and a historic cabin that was once used as a school for African American children.

In addition to its natural beauty, Oakes African American Gardens has historical significance as a symbol of the struggle for civil rights in Mississippi. The site was designated a Mississippi Landmark in 1992 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Today, the gardens are open to the public and serve as a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the site or attend special events and programs throughout the year. Oakes African American Gardens is a unique and important piece of Mississippi's cultural heritage.
