ROWAN OAK, HOME OF WILLIAM FAULKNER

Rowan Oak, located in University, Mississippi, was the home of renowned American author William Faulkner. The Greek Revival-style house was built in 1848 and purchased by Faulkner in 1930. The house features a two-story porch, a central hall, and a large dining room.

Faulkner lived in Rowan Oak for over 40 years and wrote many of his most famous works there, including "As I Lay Dying," "Light in August," and "Absalom, Absalom!" The house itself served as inspiration for his fictional town of Jefferson in many of his novels.

The 29-acre property surrounding the house includes a wooded area, a lake, and a walking trail. Faulkner's writing studio, a small building located behind the main house, is also open for tours.

Rowan Oak was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1968 and is now maintained by the University of Mississippi. Visitors can tour the house and grounds and learn about Faulkner's life and work. The property is also used for various events and programs throughout the year, including the Oxford Conference for the Book and the Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference.
