Archangel Gabriel Orthodox Church A year ago our day's plan was to explore Elk Rapids, a town we'd driven through quite a few times but didn't really know. As we left Traverse City I spotted some silhouetted folks working atop a building; that image became my daily photo. Then, not far from town, we discovered a newly-constructed wonder built by the local Orthodox congregation, so we stopped and took a bunch of pix. The <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jowo/54362764530/in/dateposted/">Random Game</a> assignment of my camera's longest lens had me scrambling around the parking lot a bit to find usable framings, but the photos came out well.

Then on to Elk Rapids, where we found <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jowo/53583761328/in/datetaken/">an interesting small town</a>. While we were exploring we encountered a helpful woman who urged us to try out one of the local restaurants; we didn't do so that day, as we had another plan, but may sometime in the future.

Then we headed to Charlevoix, where we visited with Joan's aunt and uncle for a couple hours after making a short stop to photograph the harbor light.

We ended the day back in Traverse City with my &quot;official birthday supper&quot; at Trattorial Stella.

The Helena Township Historical Society in Alden, Michigan, is a non-profit organization that works to preserve the history and heritage of the area. Established in 1985, the society seeks to collect and preserve documents, photographs, and other artifacts related to the history and culture of the township, the county, and the state. The Society also sponsors educational programs and events to promote the appreciation of local history.

The Society maintains an archives building which houses a large collection of historical artifacts, photographs, documents, and memorabilia. The archives are open to the public for research and educational purposes. The Society also maintains a research library containing books, newspapers, and periodicals related to local, county, and state history.

The Society sponsors several events throughout the year, including lectures, tours, and exhibitions. The Helena Township Historical Society also operates a museum which features rotating exhibits of artifacts, photographs, and other items related to the history of the area. In addition, the Society maintains a website which provides information on upcoming events and the history of the township.

The Society strives to make local history accessible to all and to preserve the unique heritage of the Helena Township area. With its archives, library, museum, and educational programs, the Helena Township Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history of the area and making it available to the public.

Park Place Our hotel, a year ago today., at a 6.7 mm focal length using my Nikon 1 V2.

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jowo/54362764530/in/dateposted/">Thom Hogan's Random Game</a> assigned me to take pix of the Park Place Hotel with my 6.7 to 13 mm lens. I probably overdid it, taking:

* 3 pix of our room.
* 3 pix of Minerva's restaurant.
* 7 pix of the hotel lobby.
* 3 pix of the hall outside our room.
* 5 pix looking down 7 stories through our room's window.
* 10 pix as I wandered around the hotel grounds.
* 29 pix as I walked around the block (many of those, including this image, were of the hotel).
* 29 more of the hotel grounds.
* 11 more of the lobby, including last year's daily photo.
* 2 more of the hall outside our room.

Sometimes I get carried away.

Then we wandered the area, trying to capture <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jowo/51842614349/">crosses for my sister</a>; 86 pix mostly of 11 <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jowo/53585330556/in/datetaken/">churches</a>. Finally we ate supper at North Peak Brewing; I took a couple pix there.

Looking Out the Window Last March 4 we headed to Traverse City for our annual just-after-Joel's-birthday vacation. (<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/jowo/53589184958/">There's a story there</a>. And this year we changed our destination, and the dates.) We had a room reserved in the west wing at Park Place in Traverse, but the guy staffing the desk talked us into a tower room. In retrospect, accepting the change was a mistake. The room <i>did</i> have a great view, but was pretty cramped.

As usual I took pretty much random photos on the drive north, and I posted one of those as my daily photo. When I pressed the shutter I thought I was photographing a tree, but it turned out to be a photo of the highway. I liked it, so I shared it.

<i>Much to my surprise the pic was pretty popular. On Flickr it drew over 5,000 views, and ended up as one of the day's &quot;Explored&quot; images.</i>

Snowy Suttons Bay Located on the 45th Parallel. Suttons Bay is an inlet oon Grand Traverse Bay. Sunny but windy, it didn't slow up the shoppers much.
