Trattoria Stella with Joan As usual, we ate what we considered my Official Birthday Supper (a week late) at Trattoria Stella at Grand Traverse Commons, what once was the Traverse City State Hospital. The food's locally sourced and the menu changes constantly. Eating there's an interesting experience in all sorts of ways, and the meal is usually excellent. The Minervini Group has been restoring and repurposing the state hospital's buildings for a couple decades, now. Since we visit the town regularly, we've been watching that project while exploring the former asylum's grounds. We used to eat at Stella actually on my birthday, but Traverse City Restaurant Week has made that unrealistic. Now we show up a few days later and avoid the crowds.

The Helena Township Historical Society in Alden, Michigan, is a non-profit organization that works to preserve the history and heritage of the area. Established in 1985, the society seeks to collect and preserve documents, photographs, and other artifacts related to the history and culture of the township, the county, and the state. The Society also sponsors educational programs and events to promote the appreciation of local history.

The Society maintains an archives building which houses a large collection of historical artifacts, photographs, documents, and memorabilia. The archives are open to the public for research and educational purposes. The Society also maintains a research library containing books, newspapers, and periodicals related to local, county, and state history.

The Society sponsors several events throughout the year, including lectures, tours, and exhibitions. The Helena Township Historical Society also operates a museum which features rotating exhibits of artifacts, photographs, and other items related to the history of the area. In addition, the Society maintains a website which provides information on upcoming events and the history of the township.

The Society strives to make local history accessible to all and to preserve the unique heritage of the Helena Township area. With its archives, library, museum, and educational programs, the Helena Township Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history of the area and making it available to the public.

Robert P. Griffin Hall of Justice Since I had my camera in hand, I pointed it at another courthouse that was visible from the same window of our room at Park Place. This building's windows are opaque during daylight hours. After dark, not so much. The wing on the left was originally a Congregational church; that on the right was Presbyterian. The combined architecture makes for a really interesting structure.
St. Joseph Catholic Church Last week Tuesday we headed up the Old Mission peninsula to visit the lighthouse. We mostly headed north on the east edge of the peninsula and returned on the western side. We drove by the old mission site and took a few pix at the lighthouse park. Along the way we found this gorgeous church. That set us on a mission to photograph some churches and crosses for my sister, who uses photos of crosses to focus her annual series of Lenten meditations on Facebook, which she calls "Journey to the Cross."
Porch and Fence Another photo from our wander around Elk Rapids last week. 'Twas the fence that first caught my attention, but that porch makes this image work.
Harbor Antiques Last Wednesday we wandered around Elk Rapids for a bit. Along the way we had a chat with a lady who may well have been president of the local Chamber of Commerce; she <i>really</i> wanted us to try one of the local restaurants.
Burial Ground A sculpture by northern Michigan sculptor William Allen at the Dennos Museum on the Northwestern Michigan College campus in Traverse City. The artist’s note beside the sculpture explains that the work was inspired by the discovery of a slave burial ground in Manhattan.
