This building's windows are opaque during daylight hours. After dark, not so much. The wing on the left was originally a Congregational church; that on the right was Presbyterian. The combined architecture makes for a really interesting structure.

The Elk Rapids Area Historical Society is a non-profit organization located in Elk Rapids, Michigan. It works to preserve and promote the history of Elk Rapids, Michigan and the surrounding area. The Society was founded in 1967 and is dedicated to the preservation, interpretation and education of the history and culture of Elk Rapids and the surrounding area. The Society is open to members of the public, and hosts a variety of events including lectures, tours, and workshops throughout the year.

The Elk Rapids Area Historical Society is located in the old Elk Rapids Town Hall, a building that was constructed in 1895. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The Society's collection includes photographs, documents, artifacts and other items that represent the history of Elk Rapids and the surrounding area. The Society also has a library of books, magazines and other materials related to local history.

In addition to its work preserving and interpreting the history of Elk Rapids, the Society is also involved in a variety of other activities. The Society works to promote and foster an appreciation of the history and culture of Elk Rapids, and provides educational opportunities to the community. The Clock Tower The Grand Traverse County Courthouse was visible from our room on the seventh floor of the Park Place Hotel. So I grabbed my camera and grabbed this photograph just after sunset last Thursday.
St. Joseph Catholic Church Last week Tuesday we headed up the Old Mission peninsula to visit the lighthouse. We mostly headed north on the east edge of the peninsula and returned on the western side. We drove by the old mission site and took a few pix at the lighthouse park. Along the way we found this gorgeous church. That set us on a mission to photograph some churches and crosses for my sister, who uses photos of crosses to focus her annual series of Lenten meditations on Facebook, which she calls "Journey to the Cross."
Porch and Fence Another photo from our wander around Elk Rapids last week. 'Twas the fence that first caught my attention, but that porch makes this image work.
Harbor Antiques Last Wednesday we wandered around Elk Rapids for a bit. Along the way we had a chat with a lady who may well have been president of the local Chamber of Commerce; she <i>really</i> wanted us to try one of the local restaurants.
Burial Ground A sculpture by northern Michigan sculptor William Allen at the Dennos Museum on the Northwestern Michigan College campus in Traverse City. The artist’s note beside the sculpture explains that the work was inspired by the discovery of a slave burial ground in Manhattan.
