Birdsong, cows calling, corn growing, and graves resting This video clip from the Cressey Cemetery mid-morning on Wednesday the 9th of August records the quiet space in the shade on a warm day. Near the middle of the clip, near the middle of the frame, there is a narrow outhouse (or privy) for the convenience of burial yard visitors. The humble design for the living is one more reminder of the contrasting requirements of the living and the dead.

Dead at age 23 in February 1862 While conventionally a lifetime is seen to begin and end with the headstone dates, in actual practice there are many who know the person across a much wider span. If the oldest person to hold the newborn was 80, then the baby has physical connection to a person who lived decades before the baby's own day of birth. Likewise of a newborn that the person touches when in old age: stories and photos of that connection will be given to the little one so that the old person who eventually dies will persist in those stories and photos. In total, then, a long-lived person's human connections reach back into time before birth and extend a generation or more after death, as well. Thus a life is bigger than the days spent breathing; rather, it is something like 200 years.

This photo shows one Ezra Brown, aged 23, whose time on Earth was much shorter, though. Judging from the other ages of those buried in the surrounding land, death came in many ways and at many ages. A long life was not an expectation or entitlement necessarily. Reflecting on names, headstone styles, and longevity offers a point of contrast and comparison to one's own days.
