Michigan State Trust-Railway is a historic railroad located in Owosso, Michigan. The railway was constructed in 1887 by the Michigan State Trust Company and was primarily used for the transportation of lumber and other goods from the surrounding forests to the nearby cities. The railway operated for over 50 years before it was eventually abandoned in the 1940s.

Today, the Michigan State Trust-Railway is a popular tourist attraction and is operated by the Steam Railroading Institute. The railway offers a variety of excursions, including scenic tours of the Owosso area and themed rides, such as the popular Polar Express train ride during the holiday season.

The railway features a collection of historic steam locomotives and passenger cars, many of which have been restored to their original condition. Visitors can take a ride on one of these vintage trains and experience the thrill of riding on a piece of history.

In addition to the train rides, the Michigan State Trust-Railway also hosts a variety of special events throughout the year, including festivals, concerts, and educational programs. The railway is a unique and beloved landmark in the Owosso community, and continues to attract visitors from all over the world.

Lettering, names, and weathering all point to the 1970s How different the economy, cost of living, and daily preoccupations and aspirations then versus now. Seeing this time traveler from a business long gone hearkens back to world and local events from about 50 years ago. The street name is Railroad Street, but the last passenger service ended in the early 1970s and the final freight train was later in the 1980s. By the early 2000s the rail-trail conversion was well underway on the CIS (Clinton, Ionia, Shiawassee) east-west route for joggers, walkers, and bicyclists (skiers in winter). Seeing that visitors to the library are not necessarily settling into the seats to use collections of published materials held by the library or retrieved via the state-wide Inter-library Loan network (melcat.org). Besides using library materials on site or to take home, visitors also make use of the quiet, well-lit space to think, write, look up online information, and so on. Words, ideas, publishing for many generations Before broadband reached the masses, town libraries Internet PC stations (public computers) and later wireless Internet for one's own device attracted job seekers, people filling government benefit applications, taking care of telecommunicating, medical and financial matters, or printing out (or occasionally faxing) pages. So it really does make sense to educate librarians in "Schools of Information Science" rather than "librarianship." As central pillars of a community, they offer a place that is safe, clean, well equipped, and endlessly interesting. This photo shows the enduring relevance of printed stories, manuals, summaries, and analyses. it would be interesting to transpose this total number of pages into the approximate number of trees (and cloth shreds if the highest quality paper is used) that corresponds to the sum total. For example, would it take a forest 1 mile on a side to make enough paper for this number of books in just this library? So long as people continue to read and write, indeed to gather in book circles to talk about authors and stories, then it seems likely that librarians will curate and administer collections for lending like the one here in mid-Michigan. HESR 3867 - Durand Before I began building the CN Interchange for the night, I took a moment to shoot one of the last RailAmerica painted engines around. While it's image is patched and chipping by the day, you are still able to see a little bit of the motor's history in different spots. From CRIP Blue, P&LE Yellow, the Red RailAmerica, to now the Red, White, & Blue. It was recently confirmed that the last 3 RailAmerica motors we have will be getting repainted into the G&W Paint. Before they get dipped, the HESR 2028 will lead the way first after an emissions rebuild. I'm not sure if the RA's are getting such rebuild treatment, but at the very least an RV A/C unit is getting installed on each one before painting. The 2028 should be orange before the end of the year, and depending how quickly they do it, the last 3 RA painted motors will also become just a memory.
I'd Rather Be a Crooked Tree I watched <a href="https://bluegrasstoday.com/molly-tuttle-video-from-austin-city-limits/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Molly Tuttle's Austin City Limits appearance</a> yesterday and her song <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aX3dPxXk-W4" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Crooked Tree</a> has been running through my head ever since. I fully agree with the song's sentiments. Colorful I caught this one last Saturday while we were helping Sarah and Josh move into their new home.
Joan & Pam & Shannon & Katelyn We spent several hours yesterday helping Joan's niece, Sarah, move. Here's a small portion of the crew at rest in the kitchen. I took a few dozen (mostly boring) photographs, many of which show packages in otherwise empty rooms. And some late-fall pics of the scenery around the house; some of those will likely show up over the next few days.
Laid to rest at Mt. Rest Cemetery, established 1857 Compared to many parts of the world, in the past 200 years there has been enough ground to bury wooden or metal boxes big enough to hold bodies of all dimension and mass. Once cement production became easy and cheap enough to do, then more and more cemetery administrators required the boxes to be encased in a cement shell (burial vault) so that weight of the soil and the freeze-thaw cycle of northern locations would no longer collapse the container and leave depressions in the grassy cover. One result of the U.S. Civil War was rail transport of bodies drained of blood and filled with preservative. One result of the cement vault rules or customs was to shield the bodies from normal decay by oxygen and microbes. Together these two trends for the majority of bodies results in long, long preservation. Criminal or other investigations involving opening graves to examine the remains may well present flesh and bone only slightly decomposed. According to some religious traditions or a person's own last wishes, there are still burials today and from previous generations that dismiss the embalming fluids; in some cases specifying "natural" burial (no cement vault, cloth shroud instead of coffin) in addition to non-embalming reduces the person's body to skeleton or even fragments, depending on the effects of soil microbes, moisture, and weather conditions. Since Mt. Rest dug their first grave in 1857, all of the historical changes should be reflected within its boundaries: headstone styles from big upright to small and ground-level (easy lawn mowing), pre-burial vault soil subsidence to current practices, pre-embalming to standard/customary embalming, and in the past generation a notable increase in proportion of people cremated with ashes scattered in water or on land or air (or ensconced in a columbarium). Enthusiasts and professionals who know headstone artistry and verbal patterns can also study the many burials on view. Surnames often point to ethnicity, dates of birth indicate the historical setting (likely technologies of medicine, communication, governance, events enmeshed), and first-names hearken to current ones still in circulation (or ones rarely encountered at present). All together, there is much to observe in cemetery arrangement and the cumulative exhibition of scores and scores of lived reaching their final resting place. Each instance of burial (or cremation) had different circumstances, but in the end they all rest side by side, no matter how they may have interrelated in the days they walked the Earth. From cast-iron foundry to coffee shop A stone's throw from the former train station (and now rail museum and rail-trail line, this sturdy brick building has a second life as provisioner of hot and iced drinks, mainly with caffeine. Light edibles are on offer, too. For a couple of generations heavy iron equipment parts were cast on these premises, past this serving room that once held the business operations of the company. As the main body of the USA economy has shifted from goods to services, people now walk in the front door with a delicious drink in mind, not the creation and transport of durable metal parts.
