THATCHER'S ISLAND

Thatcher's Island is a small, rocky island located off the coast of Rockport, Massachusetts. The island is approximately 22 acres in size and is home to two historic lighthouses, the North Tower and the South Tower. The North Tower was built in 1771 and is the oldest standing lighthouse in New England. The South Tower was built in 1861 and replaced an earlier lighthouse that was destroyed by a storm.
The island was named after Anthony Thatcher, a mariner who was stranded on the island in 1635. He and his crew were rescued by local fishermen and the island has been known as Thatcher's Island ever since.
Today, the island is uninhabited and is only accessible by boat. The lighthouses are still in operation and are maintained by the United States Coast Guard. Visitors can take a boat tour to the island and climb to the top of the South Tower for a breathtaking view of the surrounding ocean and coastline. The island is also a popular spot for fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching. Thatcher's Island is a unique and historic landmark that adds to the charm and beauty of the Rockport area.
