WYE GRIST MILL

WYE MILLS, MD

Wye Grist Mill is a historic grist mill located in Wye Mills, Maryland. It was built in 1682 and is one of the oldest continuously operating grist mills in the United States. The mill is a three-story wooden structure with a gabled roof and a large water wheel that is powered by the nearby Wye River.

The mill was originally used to grind wheat, corn, and other grains into flour, which was then used to make bread and other baked goods. Over the years, the mill has undergone several renovations and upgrades, including the addition of a steam engine in the mid-19th century.

Today, the Wye Grist Mill is open to the public and serves as a museum and educational center. Visitors can tour the mill and see how it operates, learn about the history of milling in America, and purchase freshly ground flour and cornmeal. The mill also hosts a number of events throughout the year, including an annual pancake breakfast and a holiday open house.
