Annapolis - USNA: Bridage Chapel Crypt John Paul Jones' remains are interred in the crypt beneath the Naval Academy Chapel inside a sarcophagus made of 21 short tons of black and white Italian marble with bronze fittings. The deck surrounding the crypt is inscribed the names of his ships: Bonhomme Richard, Alliance, Serapis, Ariel, Alfred, Providence, and Ranger. Scotland-born John Paul Jones has long been heralded as the first Navy American War Hero, often called the "Father of the American Navy." When he died in 1792 at the age of 45, Jones was originally laid to rest in an unmarked grave in France. They were later identified exhumed and transferred back to the United States aboard the USS Brooklyn (CA-3) for a proper interment under the leadership of Ambassador General Horace Porter. The United States Naval Academy Chapel, or the Brigade of Midshipmen Chapel, was constructed between 1904 and 1908 in the Beaux Arts style by Ernest Flagg. The original design featured a Greek cross plan, with four equal transepts and a capacity of 1,200. In 1938, renovations under architect Paul Philippe Cret, added a nave, which changed the shape to a Latin cross, and raised seating capacity to 2,500. The chapel's copper dome, a focal point of not only the building and campus, but the city, with a cupola raising 193 feet above the main altar. The United States Naval Academy, the second oldest of the five U.S. service academies, was established in 1845 by Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft to educate midshipmen for service in the officer corps of the United States Navy and United States Marine Core. Approximately 1,200 "plebes" enter the academy each summer. About 1,000 midshipmen graduate and commission each year. The 338-acre campus, known as the "Yard," is located on the former grounds of Fort Severn, and is home to many historic sites, buildings and monuments. National Register #66000386

July Fourth Annapolis Inc is a non-profit organization located in Annapolis, MD that is dedicated to organizing and producing the annual Independence Day celebration in the city. Annapolis: Maryland State House - State House Caucus Room The State House Caucus Room, evolving through various functions since its 18th-century origins, now facilitates legislative meetings and exhibits the USS Maryland silver service. Initially a records storage area, it became the House of Delegates' jurisdiction before showcasing Maryland's Civil War flags and then serving as a visitor center. In 2011 it was redecorated with a chracteristic deep red velvet wall fabric, overseen by architect Johnson Berman, and renamed. The Maryland State House, located inside State Circle, is the oldest U.S. state capitol in continuous legislative use, and houses the Maryland General Assembly, plus the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor. The current two-story brick building, the third statehouse on the site, was constructed from 1772 to 1797 to the Georgian style design of Joseph Horatio Anderson and features the largest wooden dome in the United States constructed without nails. An black and gold Italian marble annex was constructed between 1902 and 1906, replacing an earlier annex, under the supervision of Baltimore architects Baldwin & Pennington. From November 1783 to August 1784, Annapolis was the capital of the United States, and the Congress of Confederation, also known as the Continental Congress, met in the Maryland State House. It was in the Old Senate Chamber that George Washington resigned his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army on December 23, 1783; and that that Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris on January 14, 1784, formally ending the American Revolutionary War.
