Fort Point State Park is where Fort Pownall was established in 1759.The park also includes Fort Point State Historic Site and the Fort Point Light Station. The remains of Fort Pownall contain interpretive panels and a stone marking of burial sites. Interpretive signs describe Fort Point's history as a military, maritime, and tourist center.

A lighthouse at this point has served as an active aid to navigation since 1835 and still is; the present lighthouse dates to 1857. The light was automated in 1988. It is one of nine lighthouses in Maine still using a historic Fresnel Lens. Optic: Fourth-order Fresnel lens (1857) Characteristic: Fixed white; range 28 kilometers (17 mi) .Construction: Squire Brick Tower Other buildings still standing: 1857 keeper's house, 1890 fog bell tower, 1890 barn, 1897 oil house, (below) garage Height of tower: 9.5 meters (31 ft) Focal Plane: 27 meters (88 ft) Brick building, is the oil house for storing the fuel for the light.
