A lighthouse at this point has served as an active aid to navigation since 1835 and still is; the present lighthouse dates to 1857. The light was automated in 1988. It is one of nine lighthouses in Maine still using a historic Fresnel Lens. Optic: Fourth-order Fresnel lens (1857) Characteristic: Fixed white; range 28 kilometers (17 mi) .Construction: Squire Brick Tower Other buildings still standing: 1857 keeper's house, 1890 fog bell tower, 1890 barn, 1897 oil house, (below) garage Height of tower: 9.5 meters (31 ft) Focal Plane: 27 meters (88 ft) Brick building, is the oil house for storing the fuel for the light.
