The Musical Wonder House is a unique museum located in Wiscasset, Maine. It was founded in 1969 by mechanical music enthusiast and collector, Charles Small. The museum is home to an extraordinary collection of antique music machines, including player pianos, phonographs, music boxes, and orchestrions.

Visitors to the Musical Wonder House are treated to a fascinating tour of the museum's impressive collection. The tour begins with a demonstration of a rare 1880s nickelodeon, a mechanical player piano that plays music rolls. Visitors can also see a restored 1920s Wurlitzer theater organ, which still plays music for special events and concerts.

The museum’s collection of music boxes, ranging from small handheld boxes to large floor models, is particularly impressive. Other unique items on display include a fully restored 1870s music-making machine, known as the Harmonic Reed Organette, and an ornate 1800s orchestrion, which is essentially a large music box with multiple instruments.

The Musical Wonder House is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the history of music and mechanical engineering. It is open to the public from Memorial Day through Columbus Day, and private tours can be arranged by appointment. Cundy's Harbor Just up the road from yesterday's photo is this harbor scene.
Captain's House This house is on a hill near the harbor in Cundy's Harbor, a small fishing community within the town of Harpswell. The cupola and the location indicate it to be a Captain's House. However it was built as a hotel and today is a Bed and Breakfast. See below for more information. Perched atop the most elevated bluff on the point, 250 feet from the water, this gracious 1862 landmark home affords long views over an authentic, small, working harbor and beyond to ledges, islands, river and bays. From the octagonal cupola crowning our rooftop, the panoramic vista to the Atlantic is stunning. Sparkling water showered with buoys provides a colorful confetti background for watching lobster boats, sailing vessels, seals and shorebirds. The Captain's Watch was built during the Civil War as the "Union Hotel". It later flourished as the "Cliff House" and the "Ocean View House". Recognized by the National Register of Historic Places and the Harpswell Heritage Trust, the eight room original section survives as Maine's "oldest known coastal hotel structure". After its heyday, the inn became a stately private residence until its rebirth as a hospitable bed and breakfast. For the history buff, we have inherited an array of intriguing photos and 'stories' from the days when visitors arrived by schooner, steamer or stage. [captainswatchbandb.com]

Bridge Closed This past Monday we had a very strong coastal storm with rain and high winds. The result was flooding and many trees toppled over onto power lines. This is the Floyd J. Wood bridge that was constructed in the early 1930s and connects Brunswick with Topsham over the Androscoggin River and is a busy north south thoroughfare. It is in the early stages of being replaced and the cranes in the photo are part of the construction of a temporary bridge. The bridge was closed as a safety precaution and remained closed for about three days. I am not sure when that last happened. Just upriver of the bridge is a dam for electric power generation.
