Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) was formed in Portland, Maine in 1884. The WCTU was a social movement that sought to promote the temperance of alcohol and the protection of women's rights. During this time, the consumption of alcohol was seen as a major social problem, and the WCTU sought to reduce the consumption of alcohol in society by advocating for laws that would limit its sale and consumption.

The Portland Chapter of the WCTU was the first chapter in Maine and was made up of a diverse group of women who shared the same goals and values. They believed that alcohol consumption was contributing to negative social and economic problems in the city and wanted to do something to help.

The Portland chapter of the WCTU organized many activities to promote their cause. They held public meetings, lectures, and meetings with local government officials to advocate for prohibition laws. They also conducted a petition campaign to gather signatures in support of the prohibition of alcohol.

The WCTU also organized educational programs, such as temperance classes and lectures, to teach people about the dangers of alcohol consumption. They also established a number of local branches to reach more people in the community.

In addition to their temperance work, the WCTU also engaged in other social reform activities, such as supporting women's rights, advocating for education for children, and campaigning for equal rights for all citizens regardless of race, gender, or religion.

The WCTU in Portland continued to be active until the Prohibition era ended in 1933. Despite the end of the movement, the WCTU still exists today and continues to promote temperance and social reform in the Portland area.
