Christ the Redeemer on the Ohio Move over, Rio de Janeiro. There is a big statue of Christ, with arms outstretched, here too. Most Indianans and Kentuckians have no idea that this statue exists. The figure rises above an Indiana hill, which overlooks a sparsely populated area of the Ohio River. On the other side of the river is the Kentucky shoreline. Although I wish it were facing my camera with the river at its back, the Christ statue understandably faces crewmen of passing riverboats. The coolest zombie on the planet Gabe greets all at this self-storage warehouse. What cool glasses, blue shoes, and Western bow tie! Uh-oh, his finger has fallen off. <b>Background</b>: Gabe was a real man. Immigrating to Owensboro with his family, Gabe Fiorella grew up to become a successful entrepreneur, restaurateur, and hotelier. A past president of the Kentucky Restaurant Association, Gabe and eventually this statue once stood in front of Gabe's Tower Inn before it was moved to this self-storage facility. Mr. Fiorella passed away in 2009 at the age of 76.
Hancock Co. Jail - Hawesville, KY This is the 1854 cornerstone from the Hancock County Jail. It is located at the Hawesville Train Depot Museum.
Hawesville, KY train depot From the marker: Rails of Louisville, St. Louis, and Texas Railroad laid here June 9, 1888. First passenger train ran between Owensboro and Stephensport Oct. 7, 1888. Service between Evansville and Louisville began in April 1889. Rail line later became Louisville, Henderson, St. Louis R.R. and then part of L&N system in 1929. Present station constructed 1902; additions made ca. 1919. During heyday, six L&N trains stopped here daily. Embarkation point for Army troops during World War I. Pres. Harry S. Truman spoke here during an election campaign whistlestop, Sept. 30, 1948. Local passenger service ended in the late 1950s.

Cannelton, IN / Castlebury Inn (#0371) Another example of a building that left me feeling like I had entered some sort of odd zone. This is the Castlebury Inn, built in 1867, obviously closed for an extended period, but still discoverable on the web as a Bed & Breakfast. Though the building looked long-abandoned, looking through the window the interior looked like it was just recently abandoned.
