Christ the Redeemer on the Ohio Move over, Rio de Janeiro. There is a big statue of Christ, with arms outstretched, here too. Most Indianans and Kentuckians have no idea that this statue exists. The figure rises above an Indiana hill, which overlooks a sparsely populated area of the Ohio River. On the other side of the river is the Kentucky shoreline. Although I wish it were facing my camera with the river at its back, the Christ statue understandably faces crewmen of passing riverboats. Owensboro, Kentucky restaurant franchise remembers local native Johnny Depp As I ate delicious chicken fingers I looked up at the portrait on the wall and recognized the face. John Christopher Depp II was born in Owensboro, Kentucky. There were other Kentucky connections too. As he hit stardom in Los Angeles, Depp was a fan and friend of writer and Louisvillan Hunter S. Thomas. Depp acted in the film adaptation of Thomas’ book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Hawesville, KY train depot From the marker: Rails of Louisville, St. Louis, and Texas Railroad laid here June 9, 1888. First passenger train ran between Owensboro and Stephensport Oct. 7, 1888. Service between Evansville and Louisville began in April 1889. Rail line later became Louisville, Henderson, St. Louis R.R. and then part of L&N system in 1929. Present station constructed 1902; additions made ca. 1919. During heyday, six L&N trains stopped here daily. Embarkation point for Army troops during World War I. Pres. Harry S. Truman spoke here during an election campaign whistlestop, Sept. 30, 1948. Local passenger service ended in the late 1950s.
