The Madison County Historical Society (MCHS) was founded in 1965 and is located in Winterset, Iowa. The MCHS is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of Madison County. The Society operates an extensive museum and research library located in the landmark Winterset Courthouse building, which was built in 1876. The museum houses a wide variety of collections, including artifacts and photographs related to local history, as well as documents, books, and other materials.

The MCHS also offers a variety of educational programs and activities throughout the year, including lectures, workshops, guided tours, and special events. The Society operates a historic site, the John Wayne Birthplace, which is open from April through October. The Society also operates the Imes Bridge, a Covered Bridge that was built in 1870, which is open to the public year-round.

The MCHS also publishes a quarterly magazine, The Madison Historian, which contains articles related to local history and genealogy. The Society also operates a bookstore, which contains a variety of books, maps, and other materials related to Madison County history. In addition, the MCHS offers research services and publications related to Madison County’s history.

The MCHS is a non-profit organization supported by memberships, donations, and grants. The Society aims to promote public awareness and appreciation of Madison County’s history and cultural heritage.
