The Shelby County Historical Society in Shelbyville, Indiana, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Shelbyville and Shelby County. Founded in 1974, the Society has as its mission to collect, preserve and make available to the public records, artifacts, and other materials related to the history of the county. The Society operates a museum, which houses a large collection of artifacts, documents, photographs, maps, and other materials related to Shelby County’s history. The museum also features several interactive displays, such as a timeline of the county’s history, a model of the county courthouse, and a model of a 19th century rural village.
The Society also organizes various educational programs and workshops throughout the year, such as a monthly lecture series, a genealogy workshop, and an annual county history fair. They also host a number of special events throughout the year, such as a Civil War encampment and a Fourth of July celebration. In addition, the Society organizes an annual Heritage Day celebration, which includes a parade and other activities. The library and archives contain books and other materials related to the county’s history, as well as a collection of newspaper and magazine articles, oral history recordings, and other documents.
