The Morgan County Historical Preservation Society Inc. (MCHPS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of historical sites in Morgan County, Indiana. Established in 1991, the Society works to identify, preserve, and promote the county’s unique historical sites, buildings, and structures. Through educational programs, publications, and research projects, the Society seeks to promote and share knowledge of the local history and its impact on the development of the county.
The Society is headquartered in Martinsville, Indiana, and is governed by a Board of Directors, which consists of local citizens with an interest in preserving the county’s history. The Society also works with local governments, state and federal agencies, and other organizations to ensure the preservation and protection of Morgan County’s historic sites and buildings.
The MCHPS provides educational programs and activities to the community, such as lectures and tours of local historic sites. They also host an annual summer camp, which offers a weeklong exploration of the county’s past. In addition, the Society provides support for local heritage organizations, assists with grant applications and fundraising, and works collaboratively with local, state and federal organizations to ensure the preservation of Morgan County’s historical sites and buildings.
The Society has also published a book, Morgan County: A Pictorial History, which provides an overview of the county’s rich history and includes photographs and stories from its past. The Society continues to work to preserve and promote Morgan County’s unique history for future generations.
