LINCOLN MONUMENT ASSOCIATION

The Lincoln Monument Association is a non-profit organization located in Springfield, Illinois. The association was formed in 1865, shortly after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, with the purpose of creating a monument in his honor. The association was made up of prominent citizens of Springfield and Illinois, including Governor Richard Oglesby and former Governor William Bissell.

The association's initial plan was to build a monument at the site of Lincoln's tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery, but after several years of fundraising, it was decided that a separate monument should be built in downtown Springfield. The association hired architect Larkin G. Mead to design the monument, which was completed in 1874.

The Lincoln Monument Association continues to oversee the maintenance and preservation of the Lincoln Monument, which is a popular tourist attraction in the city. The association also maintains a collection of Lincoln artifacts and memorabilia, including a life mask of Lincoln, a lock of his hair, and personal items belonging to his family.

The Lincoln Monument Association is dedicated to preserving the legacy of Abraham Lincoln and educating the public about his life and accomplishments. The association sponsors educational programs and events throughout the year, including lectures, exhibits, and tours.
