Shirley You Can't Be Serious I had no plans to shoot trains this last weekend, but when attending the bi-annual Cornfield Free-mo meet in McLean, we got word of some Alton & Southern SD60s running south out of Bloomington. Wasn't sure I really believed it till I saw them honestly. But naturally, we had to go snatch a shot or two. We wound up at Shirley, and so did a bunch of others. I didn't realize there was a crowd following this train, but I guess that meant we were on the right track. Anyways, the ALS SD60 duo was a pretty neat catch. We snapped them real quick and jumped back in the car to follow them on Route 66 back to McLean, where they'd be waiting for some northbound traffic to clear before heading further south. Nice to see some real trains on our model train day, too!

Keeping Watch Typically when I get out of work, I remote in to my computer and give a quick look at ATCS to see if anything in the area is moving that I might want to shoot. With a recent suggestion that the P5s of the Gilman Sub may have fallen and a green signal out of Gibson City, it was time for me to visit Parnell once again. Although the clouds weren't quite in my favour, CN L585 with its pair of EMDs, an SD70M-2 and an SD75I, blasting through the tiny community. The P5s remain, with no signs of imminent replacement, but given recent events in the industry and local area, who knows how long that will be. Gilman to Clinton is the last holdout for these signals on the Gilman Sub, with few others remaining across the whole of the IC. I wonder how long they have still.
Out of Position One of those things about this hobby is that sometimes, you find your plans quickly derailed by something else taking over your original target. In my case, we left the house around the time D36 had been leaving Gibson City the last few days with the goal of being in the general vicinity of Osman or Goembel to catch the unique power on that days train - the two SP motors from Silvis. Of course, while we were there and examining our options, ATCS showed a southbound on the CN Gilman sub. The day prior, we tried for the Parnell shot, but were just two minutes too slow - why not give it a try again and come back? So that's what we did, leaving Osman for Parnell. The timing was just right, hardly two minutes after pulling up to Parnell and an IC SD70, 1011, showed itself and came blasting past the US&S P5 signals. It was then I decided screw it, let's try to nab the Clinton signals if they're still there. Spoiler! They aren't. Sadly, the ancient P5/R2 combo just east of Clinton had been removed. We then waited in Clinton by its other set of signals for 1011, but suddenly, Goembel and Osman lit up green. While we were 30 miles away from Osman. Oops. Should've just gone back after Parnell... At least we caught an IC at IC signals anyway!
