KNAPP CHESTNUT BECKER HISTORICAL SOC

MIDDLETOWN, IL

Take What You Can Advanced notices are wonderful things, and with well over half a days notice, I was aware of NS 148s unique leader. UP 6379, ex-SP 333, is one of a handful of Southern Pacific painted units in UP patchs. Of only five remaining AC44s still in the famed Bloody Nose speed lettering paint, we just so happened to have one coming our way. One problem: it was not a fast mover. It became quickly apparent as updates on the trains progress overnight and through mid-morning that 148 would definitely not be getting east of Decatur in sunlight, so once I was able to, I went out to meet it.

The day started totally cloudy, good for an eastbound in the latter half of the day, but clouds began to break up and holes of sun came through, threatening backlit photos. Some storm action appeared here and there though, and one managed to handle the light as 148 came into view. I'm glad I left when I did, as it took no more than ten minutes after arriving at Dawson for him to show up.

Questionable lighting and skies aside, it was a delight to finally capture my first SP bloody nose. If my numbers are right, only 10 SPs of any kind exist, 15 if you include the few SSW units too. I was just happy to see the thing at all. And hey, we even got ourselves a nice elevator to boot. Can't complain that much, can I?

First time ever shooting out here, funnily enough. I should come out west of Decatur more...
