The Marion County Genealogical and Historical Society (MCGHS) is a non-profit organization based in Salem, Illinois. Founded in 1969, the society is dedicated to promoting an interest in the history and development of Marion County. It also works to preserve records, books, artifacts, and documents related to the county’s past.

The MCGHS operates a genealogy and history library and museum, both located in Salem. The library contains a collection of books, photographs, newspapers, and other historical documents, with a focus on Marion County and its residents. Spiral Staircase The southern end of the IC Champaign sub is one I've not shot until recently. Still, as I stumbled my way down the roads that follow the IC south of Effingham, I've discovered how difficult some areas are and how easy others can be. Farina is in the easier camp - nice, wide open angles, with weathered and beaten grain elevator tracks making a very easy viewing of CN A408, led by IC1000 and IC1026. Big ICs and big grain elevators are things that go together very smoothly, something that's hard to pass up when following these few remaining deathstars around the system.

Stay Too Long I have a tendency to go slightly overboard with some things. Write too much, play music too loudly, and more importantly, chase for too long. I had been planning to only shoot A408 down until Effingham, but when my friend suggested traveling further south, it was hard to say no - especially given how starved for photo opportunities I've been lately (thanks work &amp; weather alike).

So, the farthest south on the IC I've ever gone, I found myself at the Alma grain elevator and bringing my camera down to the railhead while class leader IC1000, plus its younger partner IC1026, come barreling down the main at 47mph with just 156 axles on their train total. Funny how despite where I go, some things just don't change... like how I always stay too long during and after chasing something down. You know, the usual.

I think it was worth it, though.
