The National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum (NVVAM) in Chicago, Illinois is the only museum in the country dedicated to the visual arts of Vietnam War veterans. Opened in 1996, the NVVAM honors the service and sacrifices of veterans who served in the Vietnam War and their families. Located in the Pritzker Military Museum & Library building, the NVVAM has three floors of exhibition space and houses over 600 works of art, many of which were created by veterans. The museum also includes a library, a research center, a media lab, and a lecture hall.
The NVVAM's mission is to honor the service and sacrifices of all those who served in the Vietnam War, as well as to educate the public about the war, its history, and the consequences of war. The museum also works to bring together veterans and the public for dialogues about the war and current issues.
The museum's collection contains a variety of media including paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints, and mixed media. It also features works by some of the most prominent Vietnam War artists, such as Don Rumsfeld, James Rosenquist, and John Divola. Every year, the NVVAM hosts several exhibitions, lectures, and special events, including the annual National Veterans Art Exhibition. The museum also offers educational programs and workshops for veterans, students, and the general public.
