The Campbell Center Historic Preserve in Mount Carroll, Illinois is a preserved and protected property of the Natural Land Institute (NLI). It is located on the site of an original homestead of the Campbell family who had settled in the area in the 1840s. The property consists of a historic home, a log cabin, a barn, and roughly 40 acres of prairie and wetland habitats.
The historic home, also known as the Campbell Center, was built in 1889 and is a two-story, brick-and-frame structure with a wrap-around porch. The log cabin was built around the same time and today is used as a visitor center. The barn was built in 1891 and is a three-story, hand-hewn, frame structure.
The Campbell Center Historic Preserve is open for tours and educational programs, including special events and field trips. The preserve is home to a variety of native wildlife species, including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, coyotes, and many species of birds.
The Natural Land Institute works to protect, restore, and manage this property, in order to preserve it for future generations. The Campbell Center Historic Preserve is a wonderful example of Illinois’s rich cultural heritage and a great place to explore the beauty of the Midwest.
