PRESERVATION OF EGYPTIAN THEATRE

The Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb, Illinois has been a landmark since its grand opening on January 1, 1929. The theater was built in the grand Egyptian Revival style of architecture, and features a large façade with two stone sphinx pillars, a two-story entrance, and a large marquee. Inside, the theater boasts a large auditorium with 1,400 comfortable seats and a balcony level. The theater also has a full-service concession stand, a modern projection booth, and a large stage with a full orchestra pit.

In the mid-1960s, the theater was threatened with closure due to declining attendance and increasing operational costs. Fortunately, a group of concerned citizens called the Egyptian Theatre Preservation Association was formed in 1965 and successfully raised enough money to save the theater from demolition.

In the years since its preservation, the theater has been restored to its original grandeur and is now a popular venue for live music, theater, film screenings, and other special events. The theater is also home to the annual Egyptian Theatre Film Festival, which has been held since 1975 and attracts visitors from all over the world.

Today, the Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb, Illinois is a beloved cultural landmark and a testament to the power of community preservation.
