Sign, Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket and Cocktail Lounge, Joliet Road (Old Route 66), Willowbrook, IL Built in 1946 and expanded to its present size in 1956 with the addition of a cocktail lounge on the west end of the building, this Modern building was designed by Eugene F. Stoyke to house The Chicken Basket, a restaurant that began operation in a now-demolished adjacent building in the 1930s. The building features a buff brick exterior, a low-slope roof, large windows, a neon sign out front, and two chimneys. Despite the section of Route 66 the restaurant sits on being bypassed by Interstate 55 in the early 1960s, the restaurant remained an open and viable business. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, and today remains in operation as a popular local diner.
