Last Minute Changes By the pattern A-train power tends to rotate these days - switching from the Centralia-Gary megalocal to locals on the J and then back to A408 - everything seemed perfect for the IC1000 to be our southbound leader. Well, evidently someone wyed the power, so IC1020 took the lead instead. Womp womp. Not to be outdone, A408 also set off from Gary very early. This has been a pattern for a while, but they were out of Champaign before 6:30am. I also happened to wake up at that time as I expected 7-8am instead, so you can tell how the start to things went. Wild start to the day. Of course, the last thing to change at the last second was autofocus! Of the frames I shot here at Sigel, the last two, which are the two I was planning to pick from and edit after my initial glance afterwards, evidently failed to focus. Unsalvageable, and frustrating. But, all of my last-second scramble up the giant gravel pile (thanks, slow drivers, for the mad dash there) was thankfully not in vain, as a few more frames had survived my camera deciding it didn't want to focus. Huzzah. Probably worked out better that way anyway, the crop here came out just as well if not a bit better than the wider shot I had been going for originally. I guess some last minute changes work out.

The Stewardson Historical Museum Inc. is located in the small town of Stewardson, Illinois. Founded in 1985, the museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the local community and the surrounding area. Slow Down Forced to slow down through Mattoon's yard, IC1000 throttles up again as it leads A408 out of the yard. At just 156 axles, todays "megalocal" isn't quite so mega, as the entire length of the train can be seen right here at an elusive curve on the IC mainline, down by Old State Road. Not an axle out of frame. Considering that the A408 and A407 megalocals typically roster between 400-600+ axles in length, 156 is a very leisurely run for this pair of 90s era SD70s.
1940 Heart Theater This theater opened in 1940 in what was formerly a garage. Opening day featured His Girl Friday, staring Cary Grant. It closed in 2007, was saved from demolition in 2008, but appears to be unused at this time.

Fear of the Unknown When the NWS forecasts “decreasing clouds,” it’s hard to really guess what that’ll result in. It could be mostly clear, mostly cloudy, or just a few big ones here and there. All throughout my chase of IC1000 south, clouds came and went, clear skies opened up and closed again - but a few times, the timing was just right. Vast clouds overshadow the IC mainline and the large swaths of crop land that now lies in wait for the planting season in a few more months. These fields and the dead grass and trees that surround them paint winter in the midwest as particularly dreary - and it’s not exactly wrong, either. South of Mattoon, a few miles north of Sigel, the territory is unfamiliar to me. I never chase farther south than Mattoon, but I made an exception this time for the IC1000. Beyond Effingham is completely unknown to me, and so the anticipation of that unknown was certainly a little unsettling. On-the-fly navigating sure takes you to interesting places!
