The Blackhawk Railway Historical Society (BRHS) is a nonprofit organization located in Lockport, IL. It was formed in 1976 to preserve and restore the Illinois Central Railroad's Blackhawk Line. The Blackhawk Line was a freight and passenger line which ran from Chicago to Dubuque, Iowa from 1851 to 1977.
The BRHS is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the Illinois Central Railroad's Blackhawk Line. The Society operates a museum at the original Blackhawk Station in Lockport, IL, where visitors can learn about the history of the Blackhawk Line and see restored vintage equipment. The museum offers guided tours and educational programs.
The BRHS also owns and operates a historic steam locomotive and several vintage freight and passenger cars. The Society is also actively involved in rail preservation projects throughout the Midwest, including track projects, restoration of historic rail equipment and infrastructure, and the development of a rail heritage trail.
The BRHS hosts a variety of events throughout the year, such as the Blackhawk Railroad Festival and the Summer Train Rides. The Society also participates in community activities in the Lockport area and is a member of the National Railway Historical Society.
The BRHS is an important part of the Lockport community and is an invaluable resource for the preservation and education of rail history.
