Kentucky’s Tolu site: a pre-Columbian township of the Mississippian Culture that mysteriously vanished There are not that many people who will make a special trip to go to nowheresville in Kentucky in order to take a photo of a farmer’s plain-looking field. I will. This day I was not searching for eye candy but the mystery of pre-Columbian history. An ancient American town has vanished. Even its three huge artificial mounds, central plaza, and permanent rectangular buildings that once were hallmarks of the towns and cities of this civilization are hard to identify in this modern Western Kentucky site. This is an aerial view that I took. The green area in the center is what four people whom I met in Tolu refer to as a ridge. One fisherman told me that this plowed field is the place that he used to dig up Indian arrowheads as a kid. Decades ago this area, including the schoolyard to the east, outside of this image, was excavated by archeologists. The Tolu site is known not only for being a settlement of the Mississippi Culture civilization but also for <a href="http://lithiccastinglab.com/gallery-pages/toluunrestoredstatuelrg.htm" rel="noreferrer nofollow">fluorite statuettes</a> that the civilization and ancient residents of this particular chiefdom created. This civilization thrived between 1100 to 1450 A.D. at this Kentucky site just off the Ohio River. These settlements were the center of large-scale maize-based agriculture. The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tolu_Site" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Tolu site's</a> mounds and permanent dwellings were one kingdom/chiefdom of a network of many cities and townships of the Mississippian Culture that extended from Wisconsin to Florida. The civilization's center was a city of tens of thousands just off of the Mississippi River in Cahokia, Illinois, near present-day Saint Louis. Later, settlers of European ancestry established farms and then a hamlet around this ancient abandoned site. Their hamlet, now consisting of 88 people, according to a 2010 Census count, was named Tolu after a popular hair tonic. This ancient settlement has been named after the modern hamlet and hair tonic, the Tolu site.

Cave-In-Rock, Il (#0501) The actual cave in a rock. The cave is famous as a site for pirates on the river in the 1700’s and 1800’s – the entrance is 55’ wide and it fronts on the Ohio River, which is to my back. It’s part of Cave-In-Rock State Park which has a pleasant loop road and many viewpoint high on the cliff.
Cave-In-Rock Ferry, IL (#0517) The ferry barge and its tug are separate units, with the tug connected to the barge by just a heavy rod. The tug has some power to run in reverse, but once far enough away from land, it swings around for crossing the river.
