The Shelby County Historical and Genealogical Society (SCHGS) is an educational organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Shelby County, Illinois. The Society was founded in 1954 and is located in the historic W.D. Prather home in downtown Shelbyville. The SCHGS collects, preserves, and makes available to the public a variety of materials related to the history of Shelby County. These materials include books, photographs, maps, artifacts, and articles.
The Society also sponsors a variety of educational programs such as lectures, field trips, and workshops. The SCHGS operates a Genealogy Research Library which provides access to a wide range of genealogical material, including census records, birth and death records, and local history books. The library also has a number of archives, including military records, land records, and obituaries.
The SCHGS also maintains a museum which houses a variety of artifacts related to the history of Shelby County, such as photographs, furniture, quilts, and clothing. The Society also sponsors a number of annual events, including an annual quilt show and an annual yard sale fundraiser.
The SCHGS is committed to preserving the history of Shelby County and educating the public about the area’s past. The Society also supports a variety of historical and genealogical research projects, including the publication of books, newsletters, and other materials related to Shelby County’s history.
