Citizens to Preserve Jubilee College is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2011 to protect and preserve the historic Jubilee College State Historic Site in Peoria, Illinois. The site was established in 1839 by Bishop Philander Chase and the Illinois Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church for the purpose of training young men for the ministry. The college opened in 1840 and was the first higher educational institution between the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico. The college operated until 1877, when it closed due to financial hardship.
The organization was founded to ensure that the legacy of Jubilee College is not forgotten, and to preserve the remaining structures. The organization seeks to educate the public about the importance of the site and its contributions to the history of the region. To this end, the organization has established a number of programs, including guided tours, lectures, and special events.
The organization is overseen by a board of directors, who are elected by the membership. The board is responsible for the overall management of the organization, including fundraising and programming. The organization also relies on a dedicated group of volunteers who help to maintain the site and organize special events.
