The McHenry Area Historical Society Inc. was founded in 1977 and is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization located in McHenry, Illinois. The mission of the Society is to collect and preserve artifacts, documents, and photographs pertaining to the McHenry area, including the towns of McHenry, Ellington, Johnsburg, McCullom Lake, and Wonder Lake. The Society operates a research library and archives, which is open to the public.

The Society also maintains a museum, which houses a wide variety of artifacts, documents, photographs and other items that represent the history of McHenry County. The museum is open to the public and offers educational programs and activities for all ages. In addition, the Society offers tours of historic sites in the McHenry area and hosts a variety of special events throughout the year.

The Society also plays an active role in preserving McHenry County’s historical sites. The Society has been involved in the restoration of several historic buildings, including the McHenry County Courthouse, the McHenry County Jail, the McHenry County Jailer’s House, and the McHenry County Poor Farm.

The Society is funded through donations, grants, and fund-raising events. Donations to the Society are tax-deductible and all proceeds are used to support the Society’s mission.
