AUGUSTANA OBSERVATORY

Augustana Observatory is a research observatory located on the campus of Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. It was built in 1894 and is one of the oldest observatories in the Midwest. It houses a 24-inch reflecting telescope which was originally built in 1891 by the firm of Warner and Swasey of Cleveland, Ohio. The telescope is mounted on an equatorial yoke and is used primarily for astronomical research.

The observatory is home to the Augustana College Department of Astronomy, which offers a variety of courses and programs for both undergraduate and graduate students. It also runs public outreach events, such as open nights and educational lectures on various astronomical topics.

The observatory is open for public viewing on certain nights throughout the year. During these events, visitors can look through the telescope and view celestial objects such as the Moon, planets, stars, and galaxies. Visitors can also learn about the history of the observatory and the astronomical research conducted by Augustana College students and faculty.
