The house was purchased by the Ellwood family, who were prominent businesspeople in DeKalb, in 1898. The family lived in the house for over 100 years, until it was donated to the DeKalb Park District in 1985.
Today, the museum showcases the history of the Ellwood family and their impact on the DeKalb community. Visitors can take guided tours of the house, which features original furnishings, artwork, and decorative objects from the family's collection.
