The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA) Galena Sites are located in Galena, Illinois. The sites consist of eight individual sites that are located in and around the city of Galena. The sites include Ulysses S. Grant Home, Old Market House, Old Blacksmith Shop, Galena & U.S. Grant Museum, Dowling House, Old Market House State Historic Site, Hanley Museum, and the Galena-Jo Daviess County Historical Society.
The Ulysses S. Grant Home is the most popular of the sites and was the home of the 18th President of the United States from 1859 to 1861. The home is filled with artifacts from the Grant era, including furniture, photographs, and documents. The Old Market House is a National Historic Landmark that was built in 1845. The building served as the center of commerce in Galena and is now a museum featuring displays of local artifacts and art. The Old Blacksmith Shop is a restored 19th-century blacksmith shop and is one of the oldest buildings in the city. The Galena & U.S. Grant Museum houses a collection of artifacts related to the life and times of President Grant.
The Dowling House is a historic building that was built in 1826 and is the oldest frame house in Galena. The Hanley Museum is a museum that features displays of artifacts from the Galena area and the Galena-Jo Daviess County Historical Society is a research center focusing on the history of the area.
