Sherman's coming! Confederates abandon Savannah's Fort Jackson The brochure says that Savannah's Fort James Jackson is the oldest-standing brick fortress in Georgia. It is roughly two miles east of the port city of Savannah that it was meant to protect. Fort Jackson strategically played second-fiddle to the more technologically advanced Fort Pulaski, which was a few more miles east at the mouth of the Savannah River.

Fort Pulaski fell to the United States early in the Civil War thanks to a blindsided Confederate military command. [In fairness to the Confederacy, the Confederate command excused their gross dismissal of a gradual Union buildup adjacent to the fort, their weak supply chain, and their abject failure to hold onto the extraordinarily strategic position of Fort Pulaski, saying that their military intelligence had not anticipated going up against new-technological rifle cannons of the United States that could shoot further and more accurately than traditional cannons.]

Quiet Fort Jackson remained. It became the river headquarters of the Confederate military. The fort was meant to be a killer of any U.S. ship that dared come up its section of the Savannah River. The fort was abandoned by Confederate troops when the United States Army of Tennessee and Army of Georgia under the command of General William Tecumseh Sherman marched into Savannah from Atlanta.
