The ANZA Society Inc. in Oro Valley, Arizona, is a non-profit historical and cultural organization that celebrates the heritage of the early settlers of Tucson and the surrounding area. Established in 1961, the Society promotes the history and culture of the early settlers of this region of the Southwest, focusing on the Spanish, Mexican, and Native American influences. Through educational activities such as lectures, field trips, and other events, the Society helps educate people about the history and culture of the area.
The Society’s main focus is on the Juan Bautista de Anza expedition of 1775-76, which was a Spanish military expedition that established the first overland route from Mexico to the Spanish settlement at Monterey, California. Though the Society is based in Oro Valley, the organization hosts events at various locations throughout Arizona. These events include lectures, presentations, trips for students, and special events such as the annual Anza Days, which is held each year in celebration of the expedition.
The Society also works to preserve the artifacts, documents, and photographs from the Anza Expedition, in order to continue to educate the public on the history and culture of the area. The Society also sponsors a scholarship program to help students from Arizona in their studies of the area’s history.
