Fort Morris Historic Site is a well-preserved fort located in Midway, Georgia. The fort was originally built in 1776 during the American Revolutionary War to protect the Sunbury port on the Medway River. The fort played a significant role in the war, as it was the site of two major battles, the first in November 1778 and the second in January 1779. Both battles resulted in American victories and helped to weaken the British presence in Georgia.

Today, visitors to Fort Morris Historic Site can explore the fort's reconstructed barracks, powder magazine, and palisade walls. The site also features a museum with exhibits about the history of the fort and the surrounding area. Visitors can take a guided tour or explore the site on their own.

Sherman took Savannah's impenetrable Fort MacAllister in the time it takes to change a tire When its 230 or so Confederate troops went underground at Fort MacAllister, they were protected by the fort's earthworks from U.S. naval shelling. Holes from naval cannons were simply filled with earth after the shelling was over. A sign in the park made a point of the uselessness of the bombings, saying that the fort's Confederate soldiers were saddened when they lost the fort's cat to a bombardment. When Sherman marched his troops from Atlanta to the sea, Brigadier General William B. Hazen was picked for the task of leading U.S. troops to take Fort Macallister on the Ogeechee River, which guarded Savannah's south. The <a href="https://www.battlefields.org/learn/civil-war/battles/fort-mcallister" rel="noreferrer nofollow">American Battlefield Trust writes</a> of the fall of Fort Macallister: "The Yankees rushed forward through the various obstacles prepared for them, including abatis and torpedoes buried in the sand. Hazen's men entered the fort, and captured Anderson's men and 15 guns in an attack that lasted about 15 minutes. With his supply line open, Sherman could now prepare for the siege and capture of Savannah." It should be pointed out that Sherman's forces were not just Yankees. According to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/12/20/howell-raines-alabama-civil-war-history/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Pulitzer Prize-winning author Howell Raines</a> from Alabama, some 100,000 Southerners from Confederate states fought for the United States. Raines recently published his book, “Silent Cavalry: How Union Soldiers from Alabama Helped Sherman Burn Atlanta — and Then Got Written Out of History.” It should be noted that Hazen commanded 2nd Division, XV Corps of the Army of the Tennessee.
