97TH PENNSYLVANIA VOLUNTEER INSANTRY COMPANY A
LARGO, FL
The 97th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Company A, known as the Largo Rifles, was a Civil War regiment that served in the Union Army. The company was raised in Largo, Florida in August of 1862, and was composed primarily of local volunteers. It was initially part of the Second Florida Infantry Regiment, but was later assigned to the 97th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment, making it the only Florida unit in the regiment.
The 97th Pennsylvania fought in several major battles throughout the course of the war, including the Battle of Gettysburg and the Battle of the Wilderness. During the Battle of the Wilderness, the regiment suffered heavy losses, and was reduced to just over a hundred men by the end of the battle. The regiment also participated in the Siege of Petersburg, and the Appomattox Campaign, before ultimately being mustered out of service in July of 1865.
The Largo Rifles were well-respected by their Union counterparts, and were known for their bravery and loyalty to the cause. In recognition of their service, the regiment was presented with a special banner by the state of Pennsylvania. The banner, which is now preserved in the Largo Historical Society, serves as a lasting reminder of the bravery and loyalty of the Largo Rifles.
