Fort Mose Historical Society African American Community is a historic site located in St. Augustine, Florida. It was established in the 18th century as the first legally sanctioned free African American settlement in what is now the United States. The community was created in response to the Spanish government's offer of freedom to enslaved Africans who escaped from British colonies to Florida.
The community was named Fort Mose after the nearby fortification that protected the Spanish settlement of St. Augustine. The fort was manned by a group of African American soldiers, who were trained to defend the settlement from British attacks. The community grew to include around 100 people and became a thriving center of African American culture and commerce.
The Fort Mose Historical Society was established in 1994 to preserve and promote the history of this important community. Today, visitors can explore the site and learn about the daily lives of the people who lived there. The society offers educational programs, tours, and events throughout the year to help visitors understand the importance of this unique community in the history of African Americans in the United States.
