The Chapman House Museum Inc is a historic house museum located in the historic 19th century waterfront town of Apalachicola, Florida. The house was originally constructed in 1837 and was the home of several generations of the Chapman family, including the first permanent settler of Apalachicola, John Gorrie Chapman. The house was restored to its original condition in the mid-1980s and is now operated as a museum by the Apalachicola Historical Society.
The museum offers visitors a unique look into the past of Apalachicola, with exhibits featuring the life of the Chapman family and the history of the town. Visitors can explore the house and its grounds, as well as view artifacts from the family’s life. The house itself is a two-story Greek Revival-style house with a two-story porch on the front and four rooms on the first floor. The living room, dining room, and parlor each have period furnishings, including original family items. On the second floor, there is a bedroom and a sewing room. Outside, visitors can explore the grounds, which include a kitchen house, a smokehouse, and a garden.
The Chapman House Museum Inc offers educational programs for children and adults, and there is a gift shop on the premises where visitors can purchase souvenirs and books about the town. The museum is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, and admission is free.
