Located in Osprey, Florida, Historic Spanish Point is a 30-acre historical and environmental site of unique cultural and archaeological significance. Founded in 1889 by the widow of an early settler, Mrs. Potter Palmer, the site includes a museum, a botanical garden, and an archaeological site that offers a glimpse into the lives of the Native Americans who once inhabited the area.
The museum showcases artifacts, photographs, and documents that illustrate the area’s history, as well as a variety of natural history displays. The botanical garden contains various species of plants, including palms, live oaks, cypresses, and magnolias. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, such as taking a guided tour of the grounds, attending educational programs, and viewing the archaeological site.
The archaeological site includes the remains of several Native American structures, including a midden (a trash heap), a shell mound, and a temple mound. These mounds provide insight into the lives of the people who lived in the area thousands of years ago.
