Taken on April 25th & 26th, 2024, the last two days of the Academic Business Library Directors meeting at Yale University.

The 8th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Company A was formed in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1861 during the Civil War. This regiment was an infantry unit composed of 10 companies, with most of the soldiers being from Waterbury and the surrounding areas. The 8th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Company A was made up of men from all walks of life, including farmers, merchants, laborers, and even a few students.

The 8th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Company A was officially mustered into the Union Army on August 23, 1861, and was given the designation of “The Waterbury Regiment”. They served for three years and were involved in many battles and skirmishes throughout the course of the war. Some of the more notable engagements that the 8th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Company A fought in include the Battle of Fort Wagner, the Battle of the Wilderness, and the Battle of Cold Harbor.

The 8th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Company A was discharged from the Union Army in June of 1865 and returned home to Waterbury. Upon their return, they were greeted with a grand parade and given a hero’s welcome. The 8th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Company A was one of the most highly decorated regiments of the war, and many of its members were honored with medals and awards for their service and bravery.
