The Connecticut Eastern Railroad Museum, located in Willimantic, Connecticut, is dedicated to preserving the history of railroads in the state. Founded in 1976, the museum offers visitors the chance to experience the sights, sounds, and smells of 19th century railroading. The museum is located in a historic railroad station, built in 1892 and today the museum houses a large collection of locomotives and rolling stock, as well as a library, gift shop, and an indoor and outdoor display area.
The museum offers a variety of interactive exhibits, such as a model train layout, which allows visitors to operate the trains and explore the various exhibits. In addition, the museum hosts a variety of family-friendly events, such as “Ride the Rails” and “Railroaders Day”, which offer visitors the chance to ride vintage rail cars and to meet the people who work on the railroads.
The museum also offers educational programs for school groups and other organizations, such as the “Railroaders Workshop”, which teaches about the history and technology of railroads. The museum also participates in the National Model Railroad Association’s “Model Railroad in a Day” program, which allows visitors to build a model railroad in one day.
The museum is open from April to December and admission is free. The museum is wheelchair accessible and is open to the public with parking available. The museum is run entirely by volunteers and is a great way to learn more about the history of railroads in Connecticut.
