The Santa Fe Trail Scenic and Historic Byway-Mountain Branch is a scenic byway located in Trinidad, Colorado. The byway travels through the Las Animas and Huerfano counties, offering spectacular views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Spanish Peaks. Along its route, the byway passes through eight historic sites associated with the Santa Fe Trail, including Fort Union National Monument, the Bents’ Trading Post, and the Trinidad Museum of History.
The byway also passes by the Apishapa Archeological District, which is a rare opportunity to view evidence of ancient human activity. For birdwatchers, the byway offers excellent opportunities to observe a variety of species, including bald eagles, hawks, and bluebirds. Other wildlife, such as bighorn sheep, elk, and mule deer, can also be spotted along the way.
The byway also offers a variety of recreational opportunities, including camping, hiking, and fishing. The byway’s terrain is mostly mountainous and its roads are mostly unpaved, so four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended.
