Gee’s Bend, also known as “Boykin”, is an unincorporated community in Wilcox County, Alabama. It is located along the Alabama River, at the southernmost point of the Black Belt. The town is known for its rich African American culture and its quilting heritage, and is home to the Gee’s Bend Quilters Collective.

The town of Gee’s Bend was founded in 1845 by former slaves, Joseph Gee and Mark H. Pettway, after they purchased the land from the Boykin family. It is believed that the town was named after Joseph Gee, who was one of the original proprietors. The town has been home to generations of African Americans for more than 150 years and has been the site of several civil rights events, including the Selma to Montgomery march in 1965.

The quilting tradition of Gee’s Bend is deeply rooted in the community’s history. Quilting is an important part of the cultural identity of the town and is passed down through generations of women. Quilting styles developed in Gee’s Bend are recognized as a unique form of artistic expression. The quilts are characterized by bold colors and geometric shapes and often feature abstract designs.

The Gee’s Bend Quilters Collective was founded in 2002 to preserve and promote the quilting traditions of Gee’s Bend. The collective has gained national attention for its quilts, which have been featured in several museum exhibitions. The collective also provides economic opportunities to the women of Gee’s Bend, who are paid for their work.

Gee’s Bend is an important part of the African American cultural landscape in the South. Its quilting heritage and vibrant artistic tradition continue to thrive and make a lasting impact on the community.

Rockets Away! 2012 Student Launch Projects (NASA, Marshall, 4/22/12) Specially crafted rockets soared high into the skies April 22 at the 2011-12 NASA Student Launch Projects challenge. More than 500 students, representing 53 middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities in 28 states, launched rockets of their own design -- complete with working science payloads or engineering payloads -- at Bragg Farms in Toney, Ala. The students vied to see whose rocket could come closest to the 1-mile altitude goal and safely return its onboard science payload to Earth. Fifty-one teams took part, though two faced mechanical or technical issues and did not launch. Ten preliminary awards were presented, and the grand prize -- $5,000 from ATK Aerospace Group in Salt Lake City, Utah -- will be awarded May 18 after final post-flight analysis and review are complete. This is the fifth year ATK has sponsored Student Launch Projects. Great Moonbuggy Race, 1994 (NASA, Marshall, Archive, 1994) The NASA Great Moonbuggy Race is an annual event, held at the US Space and Rocket Center and organized by the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., in which high school and college students are challenged to design, build and race lightweight, human-powered moonbuggies that tackle many of the same engineering challenges dealt with by Apollo-era lunar rover developers at Marshall in the late 1960s. This photograph of the University of Alabama at Huntsville moonbuggy team was taken during the first running of the event at Redstone Arsenal in 1994 over the actual course where the original lunar roving vehicles were tested. LAGEOS I Laser Geodynamics Satellite (NASA, Marshall, Archive, 1976) The LAGEOS I, Laser Geodynamics Satellite, was launched on May 4,1976 from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. The two-foot diameter, 900-pound satellite orbited the Earth from pole to pole and measured the movements of the Earth's surface relative to earthquakes, continental drift, and other geophysical phenomena. The mirrored surface of the satellite precisely reflected laser beams from ground stations for accurate ranging measurements. Scientists at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. came up with the idea for the satellite and built it at the Marshall Center.
