THE FORT MOORE GARRISON

The Fort Moore Garrison is a historic site located in Lake Forest, California. The site is a remnant of a former military camp that was constructed in 1848. The fort was originally built to protect settlers during the Mexican-American War. It was named after Captain Benjamin D. Moore, a volunteer soldier in the California Battalion.
The fort was built on a hilltop overlooking the San Diego-Santa Ana Valley. It was constructed using adobe bricks and was defended by two cannons. The fort was described as two stories high, with a circular parapet and two small towers.
The fort was abandoned in 1849 and fell into disrepair. In the early 20th century, the site was restored by the Native Sons of the Golden West and the Daughters of the American Revolution. It was designated a California Historical Landmark in 1927.
The Fort Moore Garrison is now maintained by the City of Lake Forest. It is open to the public and serves as a reminder of the area's military history. The site features interpretive signs, a picnic area, and a memorial honoring the soldiers who served at the fort. The site is considered a “gem” in the Lake Forest area and is frequented by visitors and locals alike.
